Cardamom
Ancient people recognized Elettaria cardomomum as “queen of spices” due to its pleasant aroma and taste. It was well known from the Egyptians, they used cardamom in perfumes and chewed it to whiten their teeth. Romans used this against stomach discomfort. The oil is extracted by steam distillation of cardamom seeds. The chief constituents of cardamom oil are terpinyl acetate, linalyl acetate, and 1,8-cineole, which holds the anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial properties. The oil also contains calcium and phosphorous that helps in improving dental cavities and tooth decay. Studies found in 2009 that antimicrobial and disinfectant properties of cardamom oil are useful in protecting oral health. The researchers found that cardamom oil is effective in eliminating Candida albicans and Staphylococcus aureus. The cardamom oil is also part of natural dental products and mouthwashes.
